Since the starting of the protests in case of Rohit’s death till now, there is a uncomfortable feeling overwhelming me that the government is trying not to solve the issues by addressing them but suppressing them. The injustice with Rohit sparked and escalated a movement against the millenniums old culture of Casteism. To which the government responded with silence and more silence.
Let me tell you first it is not just the JNU students who feel the death penalty against Afzal was not justified but many others including many civil rights activists and lawyers. The people of India were shown only one side of the coin and I am sorry to say that people are not keen on finding out what really is happening. You can see that in case of JNU. You see people complaining against the JNU student that they are studying from the tax payers’ money, but they don’t want to see behind the curtains or even if they see the truth they still have some vested interest not to disclose the truth.
Starting with Afzal Guru, he was an Indian citizen who grew up in Kashmir during all the atrocities and conflict there. The army from both side (India and Pakistan) were accused of harassment, violence and even rape. The youth including Afzal grew up with seeing this and much more. According to him he wanted to become a doctor and he had taken admission too in MBBS. During which the movement escalated for freedom of Kashmir. Which led him to Pakistan where he saw the same that he saw in India. Pakistan had it’s own interest in taking up the land of Kashmir but wasn’t interested in freeing it. So because of this conflict in his mind, he surrendered to the Indian army. He surrendered because of his ideologies. He wanted freedom for his people not violence.
Then he says Indian army wanted him to become informer for the Indian army. Which he didn’t agree with. Maybe because it was against his principles to betray his peers. Because of which the Indian army beat him and tortured him including electrocuting his genitals. His wife and son had to endure this pain that he was suffering. He was in hospital for recovery for over a month. He later agreed to work with the Special Task Force (STF) of Kashmir, whether due to pressure or threat only he knows. It is said he was given instructions to accompany and help some people in order to get intel from them. Therefore he accompanied them and helped them to get to Delhi. The irony here is neither the police knew or STF knew the motive of those people nor did Afzal (according to his statement). So indirectly the police made the job of these militants easier via Afzal. But there is no police record of this. Whether there was no such incident or whether this was the truth and the records were deliberately erased, only the people involved know and it might never get disclosed. When the group arrived at Delhi those five attacked the parliament and died.
The Indian Postal Service is old and in my opinion very efficient in delivering letters but there’s one thing you can’t deny; and that is they are a bunch of thieves. Don’t blame me because I had to endure the same insult when I ordered something today. I had ordered something from an shopping site from UK. But they regrettably didn’t have India in their list of countries in the address bar. I was surprised. Because I could see all the other countries nearly or more than 50 of them. But it didn’t have India. I mailed a complaint to the site stating my problem. But then I got the following reply.
*I think he meant ‘no longer’ instead of ‘nooner’
If you’re an Indian, then you must have had that experience when you sent something to someone in parcel but they received something different or the other way around. There are so many news in the media where they order an electrical equipment like phone or laptops but instead their boxes are either filled with rocks or some other heavy objects.
The sad part is not only Indians but also the people situated in other countries know this. The above reply that I god amazed me because they said all their packages get stolen when sent to India. Therefore they stopped shipping to India and they aren’t planning to ship to India anytime soon. That’s such a shame to Indians. What kind of people are living in my country? Even Pakistan, Iraq, Iran and countries which I never have even heard of. They are not stealing someone else’s parcels. But Indians Postal Service is so pathetic that they are putting us all to shame.
In a country like India, where we feel privileged if we are browsing youtube without buffering net neutrality is being challenged. As more and more of the population is able to afford smartphones, people are getting used to the internet they love. Whether it being watching the scores online, social media or porno, Indians have started using internet in a huge number. Therefore we are getting acclimated to the internet society no matter how feebly slow the internet connections are. But because the service providers think they aren’t getting enough profit we are facing this issue of net neutrality. They have been defeated in other countries including US from charging extra money for different sites. Now they have come to India because they feel the internet community is not as mature as the others here. But, you see they are forgetting that people who are connected to internet have more exposure to these kind of issues in a very blunt manner. It’s not TV that everything will be filtered. We internet users have access to anything and everything. So these service providers who are just looking a way to become filth rich should realize one day or the other that their costumers are connected to the whole world and they know what net neutrality is. They will get defeated in India too. No one should censor the internet.
We wonder, for the world is unfathomably mysterious. We awe upon the realizations of simple truths behind the biggest of the architecture. When we are born we are bombarded with the overwhelming reality of the world around us. The chaos, the beauty, the thunder, the lightening, the pleasure, the sorrow and the spectacular realizations behind the simplest of the things. We see the ants, so small, so feeble and tiny; we wonder where they are going. We follow the queue and formation behind only to see them disappear into a hole. We wonder about their world and their culture, their dance and their murmur. We run after dragonflies, squirrels. We try to capture everything and anything. We were hungry for mystery and the awe behind them. We explored our backyard and our friends’. We used to be so full of life.
And then slowly and gradually the wonder fades. Little by little with very unnoticeable speed the spark disappears. The loud start of the music slowly disappears and fades into our ears till it becomes a white noise. Then we search for the wonder the up and the downs. We can’t see or hear anything. Where is the wonder, the beauty of the world I used to be so fascinated about? where are the birds who chirped and annoyed during the morning? Where is my mother’s baby-talk, which used to make me laugh? Has the beauty of the world suddenly disappeared? Is the world not beautiful anymore? But, No. They still are there. The beauty in everything still remains but our minds have moved on. The ecstatic feeling we used to have with these beauties have vanished, eroding our minds and forming a barren and dry desert to live with.
While watching a short video today I wanted to cry. The video was powerful and filled with the ecstasy we search for in our daily lives. I wanted to feel the joy and wonder again and cry. But, I couldn’t. Have I become that person who cannot cry? I felt like I couldn’t even control my emotions anymore. I was so angry at myself for feeling so underwhelmed by these things. The lives we are living have made us incapable of emotions. We are slowly losing our empathy. But, we can’t let that happen. We have to find another mystery and one more riddle to solve. We need to be awestruck again and explore the farthest of our reaches and search for that loud melody again. The feelings that we had before memory, before we could speak; we have to find them; we have to find our inner child again and ask again “is it not beautiful?”
We have heard these famous lines “ideas are bulletproof”. Right?! I agree. Ideas are those foundation of our society, culture, our way of living and behavior. Whether good or bad; small or big, they live on indeed. The only reason we have such a comfortable life today is because somewhere someone in the forest had an idea to control fire and make use of it some 200,000 years back. But I saw a video of Michael Schrage who explained how our ideas cost us so much monetarily and also with respect to time. But, I completely disagree with him as we are who we are because of the ideas our ancestors and we ourselves have. If Edison had not pursued his ideas and had not tested his ideas where would we be? Whether it’s a good idea like gravity, relativity, electricity or bad ideas like CFC, dictatorship, brutality, slavery they are the ones who have built us the way we are today. Because of the good ideas we progress and because of these bad ideas we learn something else. We learn which won’t work. I for one am very comfortable with who I am today. Because I have learnt so much from the ideas of others.
Ideas are just like evolution of species, if they are bad they are forgotten and if they are good they are always remembered. Sometimes it takes a long time to evolve, like it is taking us so damn long to overcome bad ideas like inequality based on race, gender and religion. But, no matter how long we will evolve beyond it. Like when Carl Sagan said “It will not be we who reach Alpha Centauri or other nearby stars. It will be a species very like us, but, with more of our strengths and fewer of our weaknesses.” So, I am not afraid of what we might lose. I am ready to explore and discover. I want to reach the farthest of the spaces and peer into the depth of our world. That’s who we are. We are our ideas. Hence, I believe ideas are worth the effort. That’s what has brought us here and will take us further.
One attack after another against our freedom. Freedom to education, freedom to speak our mind. I am so fed up with these ideologies and these extremists. All Muslims may not be extremists but their holy scripture certainly is. Not just the Islamic Ideologies but the whole religion concept sickens me to my guts.
I see the response from everyone to this barbaric event at Charlie Hebdo and it overwhelms me. In this era our freedom of speech cannot be silenced. Everyone must speak up. Somewhere I saw this quote today “I might not agree with what you are saying but, I will fight till death for your right to say it.” And that I will & everyone should.
